Occupational Health and Safety Specialist

Reporting to the Manager, Occupational Health & Safety, you will be accountable for supporting and contributing to the ongoing development, implementation, coordination and administration of the City’s Occupational Health and Safety Programs. Key areas of focus are accident/incident investigation, Workplace safety compliance, Occupational hygiene, OHS policies/protocols, conducting Risk Assessments and developing safe work procedures and training. Work is conducted both in office and field conditions.

The successful candidate has a University or College Diploma in Occupational Health and
Safety; 5-7 years of related experience, preferably in a unionized environment; knowledge in Workers’ Compensation Act, WorkSafeBC OHS Regulation, accident investigation, WorkSafeBC claims management, Workplace Inspections, and occupational hygiene testing; a demonstrated ability to provide advice and support to managers, supervisors, employees and Health & Safety committee representatives in matters pertaining to safety; extensive hands-on experience in designing and implementing safety initiatives and delivering safety training to diverse work groups.

In addition, you bring excellent communication skills (verbal and written) as well as strong computer skills. You have thorough knowledge of the Workers’ Compensation Act and OHS Regulation and other applicable safety legislation as well as knowledge of work practices, hazards and safety precautions applicable to a municipal environment.
