| Job Description: |
The incumbent in this class will assist the Operator IV of the J.A.M.E.S. Pollution Control Centre to achieve an efficient operation of the wastewater treatment facility and will be responsible for technical and skilled work pertaining to the operation and maintenance of the J.A.M.E.S. Wastewater Treatment Plant. |

| Duties: |
Operates and maintains the J.A.M.E.S. Pollution Control Centre Wastewater Treatment facility at the highest standard obtainable in the most cost-effective manner possible:
- Operates and monitors all equipment through out the Plant.
- Maintains accurate operational and maintenance data in station and equipment log books.
- Enters data to the computer system.
- Performs a variety of wastewater and sludge sampling operations.
- Interprets laboratory and other monitoring data for efficient plant operation.
- Assists in the training of more junior operators, including the Student II (Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator-in-Training) operators, in carrying out their duties and tasks.
- Performs preventative maintenance tasks such as lubricating and cleaning machinery and equipment and testing alarms.
- Ensures that safe practices and safety precautions are maintained and adhered to in the workplace.
- Performs housekeeping and general maintenance work throughout the Plant and on equipment such as sedimentation, grit and nitrifying tanks, trickling filters, secondary clarifiers, pump stations, chlorine contact tank, etc.
- Troubleshoots and diagnoses problems and taking remedial action or alerts Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator IV to same.
- Operates and maintaining the chlorine and sulphur dioxide (dechlorination) systems.
- Performs basic laboratory tests as required in Lab Technician???s absence.
- Act for Chief Operator as and when required or as directed.
- Other related duties, as required.

| Educational Requirements: |
- Grade 12, plus B.C. Environmental Operators Certification Class III Certificate or other Technical Certificate in Wastewater Treatment equivalent to the EOCP Clerk III.
- Minimum of three years experience in the operation and maintenance of a secondary wastewater treatment facility.
- B.C. Environmental Operators Certifications Program, Wastewater Treatment Class III.
- B.C. Environmental Operators Certification Program Chlorine Handler Certificate.
- Workers Compensation Board Occupational First Aid Level 1 Certificate or ability to attain.
- Valid B.C. Class V Driver's Licence with the ability to secure a Class III Licence, if required. |

| Skill Requirements: |
- Thorough knowledge of secondary wastewater treatment, chlorination and dechlorination principles and practices and wastewater analysis procedures and interpretation of laboratory data and test results.
- Thorough knowledge and skill in the operation and maintenance of chlorination and dechlorination equipment.
- Thorough knowledge and recognition of safety hazards and proper safety practices used in operating and maintaining water systems.
- Knowledge of chemical properties of chlorine and sulphur dioxide handling principles and practices.
- Knowledge and ability to perform all job duties common to the Wastewater Treatment Plant, Operator I and II classification.
- Detailed working knowledge of pumps and pump drivers, air compressors, boilers, belt filter presses and conveyors.
- Detailed knowledge of applied water hydraulics, engineering mathematics, physics, waste chemistry and standard engineering practices.
- Working knowledge of flow recording and data recording equipment.
- Basic knowledge of electricity, instrumentation and control systems as applied to wastewater treatment systems.
- Skilled in use of common hand and power tools and equipment used in the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment plants.
- Skilled in the use of wastewater quality control and wastewater testing equipment. |

| Salary: |
The hourly rate of pay for this union position is from $24.68 - $29.04 per hour (2009 rates). In addition, the City of Abbotsford offers a comprehensive benefits package. |
