The Township of Langley is currently recruiting for a temporary full-time (from approx. February 15, 2010 to return of incumbent) Operations Maintenance Worker to join our team of professionals in the Recreation, Culture and Parks Division, Parks Operations Department.

The successful applicant will have considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, tools and equipment applicable to several functional areas of construction and maintenance work. You must have sufficient physical strength, stamina and coordination to permit the performance of heavy, semi-skilled manual outdoor work in all weather conditions.

Exercising considerable independent judgment and initiative, you will be responsible for:
• operating and maintaining a variety of large industrial gas and/or electrical tools and heavy equipment such as tractors with attachments, self propelled grass mowers and concrete mixers, etc.;
• assisting in the installation, maintenance and repair of irrigation and drainage systems;
• operating a dump, flat, panel or service truck of between 5,100 and 24,000 pounds GVW to perform related duties;
• maintaining and repairing of parks and cemeteries within the Township as required including turf management, horticulture, arboriculture, conservation areas, trails, hard surfaces, playgrounds, and park structures;
• assisting in the construction and maintenance of wooden and concrete structures and performing related semi-skilled rough carpentry and masonry tasks;
• assisting with the supervision of a small group of workers performing unskilled and semi-skilled manual work;
• ensuring safe work practices;
• performing other related work as required.

It is essential for you to possess a valid class 5 (full-privilege) BC driver’s license, a Pesticide Applicators Certificate and considerable experience in general park construction and maintenance work supplemented by training courses and some supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

The CUPE rate of pay is $24.96 per hour plus 12% in lieu of benefits. The hours of work are Monday to Friday 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.

This position is defined by the Township of Langley as a position of trust (Child Safety) and requires a criminal record check prior to employment start date.
