Currently, we are recruiting for a full-time Fire Prevention Inspector to join our team of professionals in the Protective Services – Fire Division.

You will be responsible in this IAFF position for inspecting all types of public and private buildings to ensure compliance with applicable codes, by-laws and statutes; responding to complaints; identifying deficiencies; notifying and liaising with other regulatory agencies on issues exceeding own jurisdiction; conducting follow-up inspections and issuing orders and/or municipal tickets requiring compliance with regulations. You will also be advising property owners and occupants of safe operating procedures and methods of eliminating fire hazards and developing pre-incident fire plans for use by fire suppression crews. You will be using computer software to prepare and update floor plans and site drawings and compiling data pertaining to building features such as size, framing materials, and personnel hazards.

This role requires completion grade 12 supplemented by training in fire protection systems and computer drafting plus some related experience, You must have considerable knowledge of fire prevention, inspection and investigative methods, procedures, by-laws, codes, statutes and regulations related to the work performed as well as the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and to prepare a variety of records, reports, correspondence and presentation materials related to the work. Strong computer proficiency is a must. A back ground in building construction and a related trade qualification would be an additional asset.

The following are required:
• Training and/or experience related to Fire Inspection/Building Inspection process
• Class 5 (full-privilege) B.C. Driver’s License.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment
• Residence in the area bounded by the Scott Road to the West, Fraser River to the North, US border to the South and Abbotsford-Mission - Sumas Way to the east.


Additional desirable training and experience:
• 30 credits of recognized post secondary education or equivalent
• Training or experience at the technical trades or equivalent level
• Knowledge of various applicable codes and standards
• Work /Life skills related to inspection process
• Fire inspector certification NFPA or Pro- Board
• Background in firefighting practices

Compensation and benefits are as per the IAFF Collective Agreement. The hours of work are a flexible 37½ hour work week.

This position is defined by the Township of Langley as a position of trust (Child Safety) and requires a criminal record check.
