Applications are currently being accepted from a dynamic and committed individual to fill a temporary full-time Summer Career Placement for a Museum Assistant - Curatorial from approximately May 20, 2013 until approximately
August 30, 2013 (dependent on funding).
1. Duties and Responsibilities
As a student employee in the Recreation, Culture and Parks Division of the Township of Langley, the incumbent will work on short-term projects at the Langley Centennial Museum. Summer Curatorial projects are aimed at the care of establishing proper intellectual control over, and effective use our collection in the most professional manner affordable so that the Museum can connect with people in our community and beyond by making the artifacts and information resources in our profession more accessible, useful, and valuable to our visitors and research clientele.
The Museum Assistant ??? Curatorial will be aimed at supporting the following project goals:
??? Continue collections records data entry including photographing objects and scanning photographs
??? Conduct collections inventories
??? Carry out basic artifact cleaning & proper re-housing for storage
??? Assist with a temporary exhibition change involving dismantling the existing and mounting the new displays, preparing exhibition mounts, participating in the review, editing, and mounting of label copy, photo, and other documentation of the installation
??? Assist with research and development for future exhibits including a crime exhibit planned for fall 2015
??? Assist with marketing current and upcoming exhibits
??? Assist with refurbishing a permanent exhibition, including monitoring visitor use of existing exhibits, and random interviews
??? Assist with special events, including preparations, set-up, take-down, and staffing of an exhibit opening, three local parades, and the museum???s major public event on Canada Day
??? Assist Curator in supervising volunteers in various curatorial tasks including inventory and cleaning
??? Curatorial outreach projects including providing a curatorial presence in the exhibit galleries for interacting with visitors by both giving and receiving information on our displays, researching focused collecting initiatives, etc.
??? Assist with day-to-day museum operations including opening & closing, participating with other colleagues in occasionally staffing the reception desk for lunch coverage and Gift Shop retail sales as help is occasionally required with this function.
2. Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills required for this position include:
??? University or college student entering second year of study or above, with courses in history, anthropology, archaeology, arts, museum studies, or related fields
??? BC Driver???s License
??? Computer skills including knowledge & experience using word processing, Access, Excel , and Argus software would be definite assets
??? Excellent organizational, technical writing, and research skills
??? Excellent interpersonal skills, preferably with experience in the service industry
??? Previous experience in a museum environment would be a definite asset
??? Because of the physical nature of much of the work proposed, the candidate must be physically capable of lifting 35 lb. from floor to table height and 20 lb. from table to head height
??? Access to their own transportation.
3. Position dependent on funding and the following eligibility criteria:
??? Must be a Canadian student, legally entitled to study and work in Canada. You must be registered in the Young Canada Works inventory at www.youngcanadaworks.ca and you must be between the ages of 16 and 30. You must also have been a full-time student in the semester preceding the YCW job and intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW job. You must be willing to commit to a work assignment up to 16 weeks.
