| Job Description: |
Employees in this position are responsible for life guarding and instruction in various aquatic activities and, as required, maintenance of pool area. While some independence of judgment is authorized, complex situations or unusual problems are referred to a supervisor. |
|
| Duties: |
Guard pool patrons of different age groups, and abilities in various activities in a manner consistent with Lifesaving Society standards and techniques.
Ensure safety practices are adhered to within the pool area and change rooms and enforce safety rules based on departmental standards.
Instruct swimming lessons or aquatic courses in accordance with standards as prescribed by Red Cross or other recognized institutions.
Prepare effective lesson plans, evaluate students, record results, and provide feedback to students and parents as required.
Test water quality of pool and record readings, and refer problems to the supervisor.
Maintain the pool area and change room in a neat, tidy and clean manner; maintain inventory of supplies.
Treat minor injuries and make necessary arrangements for the treatment of severe injuries; complete accident reports.
Maintain an up to date level of knowledge of aquatic, lifesaving and teaching practices.
As required open and close facility; set alarms.
Perform other duties related to the position. |

| Educational Requirements: |
Completion of Grade 11 (Minimum of 16 years of age)
NLS certification
Red Cross Instructors certification
CPR Level C certification |
|
| Skill Requirements: |
Demonstrable knowledge of the theory and practice of life saving, CPR, first-aid and established emergency procedures.
Ability to establish rapport, give instruction and provide leadership in swimming and other aquatic activities.
Ability to prepare effective lessons and develop creative teaching practices.
Ability to use a variety of first aid and safety equipment.
Ability to be calm, courteous, and tactful in a variety of demanding situations.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers and to communicate tactfully and effectively.
Knowledge of pool water quality and testing procedures. |

| Salary: |
The rate of pay for this CUPE position is $23.23 per hour plus a percentage in lieu of all benefits. |
|
| Additional Information: |
The hours for this position are 'as required' and will include working evenings and weekends. |
