||Internationally recognized for its award-winning programs, Surrey Art Gallery is the second largest public art museum in the Metro Vancouver region. Exhibitions change quarterly and admission is always free. We show all forms of contemporary art by local, national, and international artists, including digital and audio art. Our programs including engaging artist talks, tours and multiple art making and learning opportunities with artists, educators, and other specialists. The Surrey Art Gallery is located in Bear Creek Park and is housed in the Surrey Arts Centre and recognizes it is situated on the unceded traditional lands of the Salish Peoples.
The Intern will work with the Gallery’s leadership and contribute research to inform several initiatives including preparing to undertake a strategic and business planning process for the future growth of the Surrey Art Gallery. This position is ideal for someone who loves the arts, and has chosen to study business, planning or public administration.
You’ll learn about and collect precedent plans and strategies from around the world and unpack their gifts including the processes used and how they measure success. You’ll start to identify best practices in communications for planning, the values and opportunities of different models. You’ll also build a resource library as well as design and build databases that will be needed for evidence based decision making. You’ll create tools to share what you learn. The information you’ll collect and the analysis you’ll develop will contribute to a strong foundation for facilities and operations that are stable yet nimble, serve as catalyst learning places for everyone to be knowledgeable and empathetic, and inspire our communities to be sustainable, tolerant, and resilient.
This position will be full time hours (up to 35 hours/week) and scheduled Monday-Friday for up to 17 weeks. Your office will be located within the Surrey Arts Centre, home to the Surrey Art Gallery as well as the offices of the City of Surrey’s Public Art Program, Surrey International Children’s Festival and Surrey Civic Theatres. You’ll work as part of a team and will be surrounded by diverse creative people, and will be mentored by skilled administrators.

||Conduct online research to source materials.
Archive documents and prepare annotated bibliographies.
Participate in meetings and create minutes.
Prepare presentation materials and speaking notes.
Create data sets for reports.
Draft reports including evidence supporting preliminary recommendations.
||Completion of Grade 12.
Emergency First Aid with CPR certification.
Two (2) years of work experience or combination of education and experience, in fields related to the work required including conducting research, service within cultural organizations, planning organizations, or businesses.
Aptitude and interest in efficient research and thoughtful analysis.
Skills in writing clearly and persuasively.
Ability to organize information efficiently.
Curiosity about culture either as an audience member or as a maker.
Potential for future leadership evident through experiences volunteering, serving on committees or organizing events.
Recently enrolled full time studying business, not for profit management, planning (social, cultural, urban), public administration or other related programs.
Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office and other presentation tools.

Be legally entitled to work in Canada.
Be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of YCW employment.
Have been a full-time student (as defined by the educational institution) in the semester preceding their job and
Intend to return to full-time studies.
