||Mission Fire Rescue Service
||This is a position focused on fire prevention programs including, but not limited to, inspection, investigation, and public education. The incumbent in this position assists management to achieve efficient operation of the Fire Rescue Service through the development and operation of public education and fire prevention programs and policy. The incumbent is also responsible for investigating fires as directed and reporting their findings based on the outcomes of those investigations.
||Develop, implement, deliver and co-ordinate public education programs related to fire prevention and fire safety including attending those hosted by or at the Fire Station.
Access or design and prepare graphics for public relations programs related to Fire Rescue Service activities for brochures, flyers, print-media, radio, video, and multi-media.
Prepare and issue press releases, act as a spokesperson for the Fire Rescue Service; represent the service at trade shows, displays and schools.
Review development applications and construction and renovation plans, and identify fire code and fire safety requirements from any applicable bylaw, code, or standard.
Complete pre-plans and perform a variety of inspections for compliance with provincial and federal legislation and municipal bylaws related to fire prevention, fire safety, and other life or public safety issues.
Issue burning permits in compliance with current regulations.
Respond to complaints related to fire prevention.
Investigate and report on origin and cause of fires, including appearing as a fact or expert witness on such matters including presenting evidence in legal proceedings as required.
Participate in the development of fire prevention and fire investigation standards and specifications.
Assist in preparation of new policies, procedures and bylaws relating to fire prevention and fire investigation.
Provide technical information, advice and assistance to other departments, government agencies and the public in a manner that is tactful, clear, concise and appropriate.
Prepare and maintain records, statistics, reports and correspondence, including word processing and data entry into the municipal computer system, and respond to internal and external inquiries.
As requested by the supervisor, delegate, co-ordinate and follow-up work of other employees, and assist in providing public education, inspection and fire prevention training to fire fighters.
As required, attend Council and/or various committee meetings.
Perform other related duties.
||Grade 12 and recognized courses in fire inspections, public education and investigations (i.e. NFPA or ProBoard Level 1 Fire Inspector and Life Safety Educator, Fire Service Instructor Level 1, Fire Investigation; along with BC Fire and Building Code courses). A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s license with air brake endorsement is required.
Experience in the fire service, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
||Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts and to communicate tactfully and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to prepare and deliver effective written and oral presentations to public groups.
Ability to provide effective presentations, courses and tours to community groups and public school classes and to assist in providing training programs to firefighters.
Ability to recognize, rectify and/or report upon actual or potential fire safety hazards.
Intermediate word processing, spreadsheets, and data entry skills.
||The hourly wage rate for this IAFF position is between $30.812 and $46.695 per hour, commensurate with the level of certification(s) achieved, plus a comprehensive benefit package.
||The hours for this position are 84 hours bi-weekly on a 9-day fortnight (extended hours for 9 days and 1 day off every two weeks).
