Job Description: |
Employees in this position perform a variety of janitorial and custodial functions. They are responsible to: perform cleaning and maintenance of municipal buildings in the public service areas, administration and offices; and in the Leisure Centre, such areas as the ice arena, curling rink, pool area, public, and multi-purpose areas. These duties include a variety of cleaning and refurbishing tasks such as dusting, washing and polishing furniture, fixtures, doors and windows, stripping and waxing floors, vacuuming and polishing, collecting refuse, setting up for functions, notifying supervisor of needed repairs, carrying out minor repairs to buildings and fixtures and maintaining the security of buildings. While some independence of judgement is authorized, complex situations or unusual problems are referred to a supervisor. |

Duties: |
Perform a variety of building cleaning functions such as dusting furniture and fixtures, mop-wash, scrub, and strip and wax floors; clean washrooms including washing sinks, toilets and floors and replenish supplies
Operate cleaning equipment such as vacuum, polishing machines and automatic floor scrubbers
Collect and dispose of refuse
Perform ground maintenance including functions around the facility as required
Clean snow and ice from walkways and door entrances
Perform minor maintenance such as change lighting bulbs/lenses, ceiling panels and globe covers, and plugged toilets.
Notify supervisor and fellow workers of safety concerns, and the requirement for more complex repairs to rooms and fixtures, including lighting and plumbing
Respond to routine enquiries and give assistance to user groups and the public
Maintain routine records related to the duties of the position
Maintain the security of the building by locking doors and windows as required.
Set up rooms as required in preparation for meetings, programs and/or rentals including setting and removing furnishings and equipment
Participate in the development and delivery of training for new staff.
Provide information related to the performance assessment of new staff.
Participate in the development and implementation of new policies and procedures.
Perform other related duties.

Educational Requirements: |
Facilities Maintenance Worker 1???s must have completed Grade 12 (or equivalent) and possess a Building Service Worker certificate with a minimum of 6 months??? experience in a janitorial-type position. Preferred candidates will also possess Refrigeration Safety Awareness (RSA) certification and an Occupational First Aid Level 1 certificate (or recognized equivalent). A valid Class 5 BC Driver???s license is also required. |

Skill Requirements: |
Basic knowledge of the operation of commercial vacuum floor scrubbers and other cleaning equipment
Ability to work with minimum supervision
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts and to communicate tactfully and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Sufficient physical strength and stamina to perform the required duties.

Salary: |
The 2020 hourly rate for this CUPE position is $30.10 per hour. |
