Job Description: Applications are currently being accepted from a dynamic and committed individual to fill a temporary full-time Career Placement for the position Museum Assistant ??? Curatorial, Indigenous Content from approximately November 30, 2020 to March 31, 2021 (approx. end dates are subject to change dependent on funding).

Duties and Responsibilities
As an intern with the Arts, Culture and Community Initiatives Division of the Township of Langley, the successful incumbent will work on short-term projects at the Langley Centennial Museum and Exhibition Centre. Curatorial projects will involve the care, establishment of proper intellectual control and effective use of the museum???s Indigenous art, artefacts and archaeological collections that the museum holds in trust. A manner of professionalism is required for the Museum to connect with people in our community and beyond by making the artifacts and information resources more accessible, useful, and valuable for our visitors and research clientele. This position is aimed at building and strengthening community partnerships with First Nations including Kwantlen, Katzie, Semiahmoo and Matsqui, the Lower Fraser Valley Aboriginal Association and BC Metis organizations, providing dynamic cultural experiences, enriching our on-line databases of artifacts and photographs and extending the current research of First Nations history to supplement the planned exhibits and programs for Salishan Place, a new museum opening in 2023.
The Museum Assistant ??? Curatorial, Indigenous Content will support the following project goals:

??? Review of the existing First Nations collection, exhibition planning and research on additional resources that could be included in the museum's First Nations collections to be held In Trust for any participating First Nations.
??? Identify potential First Nations artifacts and archival documents that could be accessioned or borrowed for use in new exhibits and programs in Salishan Place
??? Identify existing oral histories that have been recorded, and add 3 oral histories (usually 4-12 hours each) to the permanent collection
??? Photograph or oversee the photographing of First Nations items in the collection, previously not photographed or improve upon previous images with new photographs
??? Accession photographs into the historic photograph collection
??? Explore what histories and objects exist within other museum collections that relate to the history and culture of First Nations in the Lower Fraser Valley area

Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills required for this position include:
??? Computer skills including knowledge and experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher and collections database software are considered assets
??? Excellent organizational, technical writing, research and manual skills with a penchant for attention to details
??? Excellent interpersonal skills, preferably with experience in teamwork
??? Experience working with First Nations communities and organizations including lived experiences within First Nations or Metis communities or organizations
??? Previous experience in a museum environment is considered an asset
??? Must be physically fit - capable of lifting 35 lb. from floor to table height and 20 lb. from table to head height

Position dependent on funding and the following eligibility criteria:
??? Currently a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, legally entitled to work in Canada
??? Between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
??? Willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment
??? Will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with the program
??? Currently unemployed or underemployed
??? College or university graduate
??? Have not previously participated in or been paid under this or any other Career Focus internship program funded under the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy
