Job Overview
The Township of Langley is currently recruiting for a regular full-time Trails and Natural Areas Maintenance Worker to join our team of professionals in the Public Works Division, Parks Operations Department. Reporting to the Manager, Parks Operations, in this unionized position you will inspect municipal trails and parks for condition, vegetation encroachment and safety concerns. You will perform unskilled and semi-skilled trail construction and maintenance tasks, plant shrubs, trees and ground covers in naturalized areas and supervise the work of seasonal help. This position requires sufficient stamina, strength and agility to perform manual outdoor work in all weather conditions.
Responsibilities
• Inspect and maintain trails, park premises and facilities
• Plant shrubs, trees and ground covers in naturalized areas
• Provide feedback in decisions related to planning, organizing and administering construction renovation activities
• Supervise and check the work of seasonal helpers performing tasks and direct onsite work of truck drivers and equipment operators
• Operate a variety of power and hand tools and heavy machinery including a mini-excavator, front end loader, skid steer and ride-on mower
• Respond to complaints and answer a variety of enquiries from the public regarding park and trail facilities and conditions
• Drive a truck to transport tools, equipment, materials and staff to and from job sites
• Prepare and maintain records
• Perform related work as required
Qualifications
• Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by horticulture, forestry or landscape construction courses, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
• Considerable knowledge of assigned parks and trails areas and of the rules and regulations governing the use of the same
• Considerable knowledge of safe work practices and the methods, tools and equipment used in parks operations
• Ability to perform a variety of parks maintenance tasks and operate heavy machinery such as a mini-excavator and front-end loader
• Ability to supervise and check the work of others
• Skill in the use and care of various hand and power tools
This position is defined by the Township of Langley as a position of trust (Child Safety). The successful candidate will be required to have a Police Information Check as a condition of employment (Note - Not required as part of the application process, however will be required upon consideration for employment).
Required Certifications/Licenses
Candidates must have the following valid and current certifications/licenses (must be valid at the time the posting closes) and these must be attached with your application.
• BC Class 5 (full privilege) Driver’s License with Heavy Trailer Endorsement (Code 20). You must include with your application a current Personal Driving Record (select the 5-year option if obtaining online) that has been obtained within 6 months of the closing date. Please note that a copy of your Driver’s License and the Driver Factor Report will not be accepted.
